Plot 14

Christiania glass house, 2007

I’m the new owner of allotment plot 14 in Manchester. It doesn’t look at all like the photo above (Christiania Glass House in Copenhagen) but this image says all I love about allotments – the make, mend and DIY approach to life.

So, my plot started off as a ‘field’ of weeds, namely couch grass and horsetail with quite a lot of dock. Basically all the nightmare weeds. Horsetail is especially scary and has a sense of 50s sci-fi about it.

Horsetail can actually look amazing. I saw this on the Highline, NYC – i think its related to horsetail.

As you can see below, i’ve cut down all the growth and starting to cover the plot with cardboard, sheeting, carpet and wood. This is definitely  a long term project and i’ll be working on the plot all through the winter to hopefully get it ready to grow on next year.
